The Future of the Dock at Wilgreen Lake in Madison County Floats in the Balance

Now that the summer months are in full swing, you may have recently visited a bit of a hidden gem in Madison County: Wilgreen Lake.

However, the dock there was deemed unsafe to walk on and has been closed for quite some time. The small lake is still open for business however, and the boat ramp is still fully functional. We spoke to Deputy Judge/Executive for the County Colleen Chaney, who said it is quite an interesting story as to how the dock ended up closed.

Chaney says it was owned by a private entity originally, and there was even a maintenance person that lived on the property. However, because the area fell into disrepair, there is no possible way to make the area a fully-functioning marina once again.

Chaney explained that multiple request-for-proposals went out to private companies to possibly get the dockhouse and slips up and running again, but when those entities saw the state the dock was in, they backed out from the potential project.

Therefore, Chaney says it is still open for boating and fishing, but not for swimming. Also, because of potential complaints about sewage, she says it is the same as any other lake that the fish should probably only be consumed at your own risk.
