Shoppers at the Meijer store in the Richmond Center were startled to horrified today when the sound of a gunshot rang out in the store. One eyewitness told WBON-TV9, that their family was no more than 50 feet away from the man whose weapon fired. “It was definitely scary for few minutes for my daughter and husband until they realized the danger was contained to just that one individual,” the witness said.
Apparently, the person was open carrying, and for some reason the gun accidentally discharged, causing the person to shoot themself in the foot.
Richmond Police and EMS officials responded to the scene to treat the subject and investigate the matter. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday March 4, 2023.
According the RPD, the shopper had the gun holstered, and when it fired it shot the man carrying the pistol in the foot. No one else was around in very close proximity when the incident occured, and no charges have been filed in the matter at this time.
The matter remains under investigation by Richmond Police.
