Estill County’s own Sarah Beth Terry dropped by our studios at WBON for this edition of Musical Musings. As Terry’s new album, Estill County Rain, recently debuted, we spent time discussing themes that are prevalent on the album.
Now that Sarah is back home, a large part of her album revolves around what life is like living in a small Appalachian town. This is heard in songs like the Bill Munroe-influenced “Mountain Man” as well as the title track, which is an emotional recount of a lost love.
Terry talks about her musical career, from being taught how to write by her mother, an Estill County writer, to playing in Nashville. She tells us that even though Nashville covers a much larger area, she was able to find a section of the music city that reminded her of living in a small-town community.
Another topic that Sarah discussed with us is her writing process. “It’s like watching a tornado form”, Terry says. “Apparently, I turn into a whole different person.”
In between painting portraits of mountain life through her lyrics, Sarah also displays some of her tattoos that she has accumulated over the years, including a special one that reminds everyone that home is where the heart is.
