Proponents of seeing Madison County go entirely wet turned in over 11,500 signatures Tuesday from the petition drive that has been ongoing for the last few months. The petition is the first step in a long process to vote Madison County wet. If the petition has the required registered voter signatures of 7590, then the measure will be put before voters on the upcoming May ballot.
One of the principal advocates for the initiative, local attorney and Apollo Pizza restauranter, Wesley Browne turned in over 11,500 signatures to the Madison County Clerk’s office Tuesday afternoon. Browne expressed the need for a ‘big cushion’ on signatures as many will possibly be duplicates, out of town or unregistered people. “That’s why we shot for far more signatures than what is required. Now I’m confident we have the numbers to put it before the people.”
County Clerk Kenny Barger’s office will now be task with verifying the signatures to make way for the alcohol vote to be on the next election ballot. “We have three people working on going through and checking each signature for verification, and we will do that until we reach the number of signatures required.”
Barger expected the results of the certification could be completed by COB Friday.
