The Richmond Parks and Recreation Department will be fishing for a good time this weekend for the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby at Lake Reba on Saturday, June 5th from 8AM – 10AM.
This event is for kids aged 16 & under and will feature free fishing, games, prizes, informational sessions from local outdoors groups, and the chance to have a great time! There is no pre-registration required and the event is completely free; guests only need to show up to the Lake Reba boat dock, located near the park entrance off of Catalpa Loop Rd. This year the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department are partnering with local groups The Cain Pole, Texas Roadhouse, Cabela’s, The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Richmond Outdoor Committee to give out prizes and have classes on the day of the event to teach kids the fundamentals about fishing and safety.
Elizabeth Foster, program coordinator, said of the Fishing Derby “We feel as a department that organizing the Fishing Derby is crucial to our wide mission of promoting the importance of not only parks, but being outdoors in general. The opportunity to have a risk free chance to try out and experience the sport of fishing may just be what some kids or families need to get hooked. We highly encourage anyone, regardless of knowledge or skill level to come out Saturday to try out this awesome activity.”
Every year, in addition to the Free Kid’s Fishing Derby, the Kentucky Department of Wildlife Resources conducts a state-wide free fishing weekend where Kentucky residents can fish on public waters without the need of a fishing license. This helps to encourage more people to get out and experience the natural beauty that the state has to offer.
The annual Fishing Derby is held in conjunction to further this mission and teach younger children about the joys of fishing and the importance of Kentucky’s natural waterways.
