Roads Treated; Threat of Black Ice Diminished

The snow may be gone, but schools were closed in the area today due to threats of black ice. According to KYTC, District 7 crews worked overnight and have continued treating and patrolling roadways this morning following threats.

The forecast predicted low temperatures beginning Sunday evening and remaining through the early Monday morning hours. There was a reported high probability of flash freezing and black ice forming.

Some counties in the district had icy areas at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday evening. Priority routes, such as interstates and bypasses were dry. Sections of wet roadway were found where water did not drain from the rainfall on Sunday.

The temperatures throughout the district have now leveled out. They should begin to rise steadily with sunlight. This is a good time for motorists to winterize their vehicle if that has not already been completed.

Keep in mind these tips if preparing your vehicle for winter weather:

  • Make sure your vehicle is sufficiently winterized – check the battery, antifreeze level, heater, defroster, wipers and windshield washer.
  • Try to keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full to prevent fuel line freezing and in preparation for possible lengthy delays on the roadway.
  • Make sure your vehicle has an emergency care kit. It should include jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid, an ice scraper, blankets, nonperishable food, a first aid kit, and traction material.
