Richmond Commission Approves Acreage for $60 Million Park Complex

Richmond City Commissioners took a giant step at Tuesday night’s City Commission meeting in an effort to solve the city’s deficiency of park space. The commissioners approved the purchase of 280 acres of land, located on Goggins and Tates Creek Road.

The area will be developed into a $60 million dollar park system with a proposed sports complex comprised of multiple sports field and basketball courts, an amphitheater, pickle ball courts, a 20,000 square foot play area, dog park, seven group shelters, large swaths of green space, bike trails, and much more.

Although the price tag may seem steep, city officials discussed during the meeting that this new area would have the ability to generate over $9 million per year from hotel tax, and $12.4 million through taxable sales.

The next step is to annex the property into the city as it is currently property of Madison County, before any development can occur.
