Richmond police and the Occupational safety and health administration are now investigating the trench collapse that occurred in Richmond yesterday. A man died while he was was working in the ditch when it collapsed around him. According to the coroner, the victim has been identified as 38 year old Loren Richmond. Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said that the investigation at the scene is underway, but he is not sure as to the cause of death from the autopsy at this moment.

We spoke with deputy communications director Alex Englen from the OSHA office in Frankfort, who says they have received the complaint from yesterday’s tragic accident.

OSHA regulations state that a trench such as the one at the site must have a trench box in place if it is deeper than 5 feet. The one that collapsed yesterday was 15 feet deep according to first responders.
