R. David Show
Yesterday, Monday afternoon, it was my pleasure to go back in time and become a summer camper. The Richmond Police Department sponsors summer camp for Richmond youths from 11 to 14 years of age. The young summer campers get to go bowling at Galaxy Bowling Alley, horseback riding at Stepping Stone Ranch, visit Paradise Cove, Kentucky Kingdom, and the Louisville zoo among other events this summer.
Jerry Jones, the owner and caretaker of Dreaming Creek Farm, invited the young campers out Union City Road to have lunch. The chili hot dog was quite tasty. Jerry talked to the campers about helicopters named Apache, Black Hawk, and Viper. The campers learned that U.S. Military helicopters are traditionally named after Native American Indians.
Jerry showed his slide presentation where an airplane would haul a glider that was tied to the airplane for takeoff and then released to soar through the air. Jerry tried to encourage the children to become pilots and learn about flying. Jerry even mentioned Eastern Kentucky University and their pilot program. Jerry ended his presentation to the campers with a warning to stay away from drugs and alcohol.
After the campers had left, Jerry shared with me and my friend how alcohol and drugs had worked to destroy two of his four brothers.
Jerry Jones is a retired IBM IT specialist. Jerry also worked for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital during his long IT career. Jerry is originally from London, Kentucky and chose Madison County as his retirement home due to having a child who is an Air Force disabled veteran living in Richmond. He also reiterated that he loves “to chase his grandchildren.”
Jerry shared his love of flying with the RPD Summer Campers and also his love of cooking. Jerry has built a wonderful barn dominion at Dreaming Creek Farms and hosts several events at his wonderful spot of heaven in Madison County. Jerry has hosted weddings, birthday parties, music shows, sorority and fraternity formals, and many other events at Dreaming Creek Farm. Now, Jerry can add that he has hosted the RPD Summer Camp. All the young campers left with a smile on their faces.
Drive out Union City Road and look for the Dreaming Creek Farm sign on your right and drive up to the top of the hill. Dreaming Creek Farm is another beautiful view of Madison County and the surrounding counties at this wonderful location.
Thanks Jerry for hosting the RPD Summer Campers.
