For many student athletes, winning a tournament is a school highlight. On Monday night, however, middle school basketball players and parents suddenly found themselves in a panic after an alleged disruptive fan got arrested by police following the game.
McNabb Middle School and Bourbon County were hosted at Woodford County Middle School to determine the winner of a championship game. During the trophy presentation, faculty and parents were caught by surprise when they saw a police officer attempting to detain Mark Anthony West, a man who authorities say was behaving inappropriately during the proceedings.
In a video sent to WBON by another fan at the game, West is seen backing away from the officer onto the basketball court before being subdued and eventually arrested.
During the arrest, authorities located a firearm on West’s person, prompting school faculty and coaches to quickly usher players and parents out of the gymnasium.
West was lodged in the Woodford County Detention Center where he was charged with Alcohol Intoxication in a Public Place (first & second offenses), Menacing, 3rd Degree Assault, and Unlawful Possession of Weapon on School Property.
Following the incident, Montgomery County Schools released a statement disclosing the fact that West was in possession of a gun during the altercation, but that it was not used at that time. MCS later went on to state that all of their students and parents were safe.
