The number 8 story has three new basketball head coaches in the 44th district. The three coaches had 32 seasons on the sideline of local basketball. The Lady Indians and Lady Eagles said goodbye to their coach as well as the Model Patriots.
Wes Scarberry was relieved of his coaching duties at Model after 12 years at the school. He compiled a 172-169 record at Model and led the Patriots to two 11th region tournaments as the runner ups of the 44th district. He led Model to an All A tournament appearance in 2013. Scarberry is now an assistant coach at Frederick Douglas High School in Lexington.
Summer Simmons stepped down as Madison Southern girl’s basketball coach after 9 seasons. In her time as Southern she led the Lady Eagles 126 wins and two district championships and seven district runner ups. In 2015 Madison Southern won it’s first ever regional game over Lexington Catholic. Summer is now spending her free time off the court at home with her young family.
The lady Indians saw their coach of the past 11 seasons step down and become new athletic director of Madison Central. Cooksey led the Indians to their first trips ever to the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2011 and 2013. Under his guidance Madison Central won 9 district titles. Robert won 224 games for Central and his teams only posted one losing season..his final season. Central reached the 11th region tournament ten times and was in the final four of the region five of those times.
All three schools have new head coaches in place but under the guidance of these great coaches they will have big shoes to fill.
