In a virtual hearing this morning, 25-year-old David Sparks of Garrard County has now been sentenced to 50 years behind bars after pleading guilty to the murder of Richmond mother Savannah Spurlock.
Garrard County court records report Sparks originally pleaded guilty on December 2nd to Spurlock’s murder as well as tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse for a total sentence of fifty years, and he is not eligible for the death penalty.
Sparks allegedly acted alone in the death of Spurlock, who was last seen in January of 2019 in Lexington and whose body was discovered in July in Garrard County.
In a post from the remembering Savannah page, the family said that it was a shame that Sparks would not be in the courtroom with the family, who watched virtually and he could not look them in the eye. However, those closest to Savannah remarked that the chapter can now come to a close in the courtrooms.
After the sentencing, the family posted:
“We are grateful that we do not need to endure the trauma of a trial and that David Sparks can never get an appeal and go free. The term justice loses its meaning when this tragedy hits your family. No amount of earthly justice will ever be enough for the beautiful life stolen. We will fight to keep David Sparks in prison as long as possible, that he could never hurt anyone ever again. Young people, hold your trust as a treasure. Evil was lurking for Savannah, and you never know what wolves are lurking. Savannah, we honor your memory. Your smile. Your laugh. Your thick country accent. The way you loved your babies. We love you. #SavannahStrongWe are currently waiting to meet with the prosecutor to ask the million questions we still have. We’ve been silent for so long, and I am hoping we can share more details later today via this memorial page.”
