Saturday night the Richmond Center was a buzz with music, classic cars, and dogs! For the 4th year Pennies for Paws was held to benefit the Madison County Humane Society.
This was the 3rd year a classic car show was held along with live music from the Bent Penny Band. 95 cars were registered for an opportunity to win a trophy. The car show is one of four major fundraisers the Humane Society has over the course of a year. Last year $4183 was raised from the event to help with the cost that comes with saving and helping animals across the county. Along with raffles and door prizes Luxury Pets were in attendance cutting dog nails with all the money going to the Humane Society. Luxury Pets employees volunteered their time to help. Luxury Pets is located at 239 Cardinal Drive in Richmond and offer boarding, doggie daycare as well as grooming.
As of today there are 24 dogs and 90 cats that are adoptable from the Humane Society. All animals brought into the Humane Society are seen by a vet and are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and treated for heart worm and fleas. Of course with so many dogs and cats coming through in a years time the cost of vet bills alone can become a huge financial burden but some of the animals come into the program with some serious health issues. Just recently a dog was brought in that had been hit by a car and had two broken legs that required surgery. A case like this can deplete any savings that may have been ear-marked for other expenditures. Along with serious injuries some of the animals are placed on special diets and medication. When asked what the Humane Society needs most, after financial donations, the biggest need paper towels (you can imagine how many rolls that is used on a weekly basis), cat liter, puppy pads as well as dog and cat food. To adopt a dog or cat you will need to fill out an application and be approved. The cost of adopting varies on the age and size of the animal. The cost of adoption accounts for the spaying/neutering that was done as well as the micro-chipping and shots/medicine. Every animal in the program came in from a horrible situation. Many times the police will call in the middle of the night sometimes with an animal that is in need and a volunteer will get up and pick up the dog/cat. You may only think of only dogs and cats when you hear Humane Society but they have also helped with horses recently in a case of animal cruelty.
The biggest need facing the Humane Society is the lack of Foster homes. With so many dogs and cats they need to be placed with families until they are adopted.
