The Eagles have not had the ideal start to the season, we all know that, but even in the losses you can see this team putting things together. They have faced a great quarterback this season, Beau Allen of Lexington Catholic and a great tailback last week in Freddy Chenault of Madison Central. Eagles have faced three top 10 teams in the first four and this tough schedule should have Madison Southern ready to defend their district championship later this season. Eagles have yet to lose a game in district play since the district was realigned. Of course you want to see wins after working hard in practice but the non district games don’t mean anything if you can’t win in district play. With that being said this week another top 10 team, this time a top 5 team in our class Southwestern (4-0) will be the opponent. Eagles travel to Somerset.
Southwestern has allowed 45 points this season with 24 of those coming last week against Henry Clay. Warriors are led by quarterback Drew Sawyers who has thrown for 355 yards this season but he leads the team in rushing with 377 yards. He has scored 6 of the teams 14 touchdowns. He is joined in the backfield by Chase Doan and Austin Barnes who have each rushed for over 200 yards apiece. JP Vaught leads the team in receiving with 13 receptions and 180 yards. Defensively Southwestern has forced 6 turnovers and have 9 sacks as a unit. Austin Barnes has 5 sacks and Josh Williams adds 4 sacks.
In the game last week Henry Clay was able to throw the ball against Southwestern. Tobias Storm on the year, his first under center, he has passed for 329 yards and 3 scores. He has thrown 3 picks but two of those can be credited to trying to make plays late while trying to orchestrate a comeback. Just like his counterpart he leads the Eagles in rushing with 383 yards. Alex Knuckles has run the ball 27 times this year and scored 5 times while gaining 272 yards. Isiah Buttry has 4 TD’S but has been quiet the last couple of games. Clay Tinsley has had a monster start to the year, he leads the team in receiving with 10 catches for 120 yards but he also leads the team in returning kicks. He has returned a kickoff for a score already this season. Eagles have a talented receiving corp behind Tinsley, Seth Shepard has caught 5 balls for 69 yards, Zeke Benton has 4 receptions and Jordan Casteel and Knuckles have caught 3 passes each. On defense the Eagles have forced 4 turnovers and have 8 tackles for losses. The defense is led by Levi Benton and his 29 tackles but he has help from Clay Bunch 27 tackles, Knuckles 26 tackles, Zeke Benton 23 tackles, Tinsley 19 tackles, and TJ Estes adds 14 tackles.
