Madison Central will be returning to the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2015 after the Indians knock off Scott County 8-6 tonight.
The Indians (29-7) came into the match-up against Scott County (30-7) off a thrilling win last night over Woodford County4-2. Senior Jeremy Cox with a two run homer to secure the victory over the Yellow Jackets. Scott County ranked number two in the final AP poll of the year earned it’s way to the regional championship by holding off Lafayette, also ranked in the top ten, 8-7. The game Sunday afternoon featured two top seven teams in the state of Kentucky, as it’s always been said the eleventh region is the toughest in the state. Most regions have one maybe two teams ranked much less ranked in the top ten of the entire state. The eleventh region had three top ten teams in it’s final four and that doesn’t count Woodford who won over twenty games.
Sunday afternoon marked the second time the two teams would meet this season, back on May 9th in Georgetown the Cardinals earned a 5-1 victory.
Sunday afternoon the Indians ran Bryce Travis to the mound. Madison Central got the offense going early getting three runs in their first at bat. Ben Snapp drove home the first run and Bryce Travis knocked in a pair with a base hit. In the third Central added to their lead with a Snapp triple and a suicide squeeze from Devin Hukill to put the Indians up 5-0 after three and a half. Bottom of the third Scott County got a run off a homer but Central answered that run with one of their own in the fourth when Trey Eden knocked in a run.
The seventh inning saw Central add two more runs making it 8-1. Snapp who went 3-4 and drove in three runs doubled home a run and Jeremy Cox added an RBI single. Bryce Travis who started the game went two and two thirds before being relieved by older brother Cameron Travis. Cameron went three and a third before being pulled in the seventh for Lucas Myers. Myers started the opening game of the region versus Bryan Station and nearly threw a no hitter in that one. Lucas would get the first two outs but the Cardinals wouldn’t go away quietly. They erupt for five runs with two outs. Senior James Goble replaced Myers and recorded the final out and thanks to the offense in the seventh inning Madison Central once again sits atop the eleventh region.
Madison Central will open play in the State Tournament Friday June 8th against Bowling Green. The winners of the fourth region Bowling Green will enter the game 21-11.
