Two of the biggest rivals in college football square off this Saturday in the Iron Bowl, and there is a surprising connection between Auburn and Alabama to Richmond that you may not be aware of. WBON-TV had youth football coach Michael Goggins in the studio to explain.
Goggins said he was inspired early on to be a youth football coach, and lived in Madison county all his life.
Damien Harris and Jarrett Stidham are just two of the outstanding players that Goggins coached.
When asked if he knew of their talent on the field early on, Goggins said it was obvious from the start.
He laughed while reminiscing, and told us that Damien Harris did not take up the sport too quickly at that young age, however.
Goggins had a few stories about Jarett Stidham as well, and reiterated that he was a very smart, dedicated kid.
The two boys, as running back and quarterback, always worked well in conjunction with one another on the field. Goggins says they were a big part of why they had an undefeated season back then of 10-0.
When it comes to the game this Saturday, Goggins was adamant that he will be a neutral party concerning what is arguably the biggest college football rivalry.
Goggins said the boys wanted him to be there Saturday in Alabama, but he will be spending his holiday weekend with family. However, when asked if he will be watching, Goggins said it will no doubt be on the TV as he cheers on two of his most beloved players.
