Lady Eagles fall in opening game

The Lady Eagles of Madison Southern opened the Jack Burford Classic against a good Harrison County team. Harrison Co (6-2) coming off a close loss to Lexington Catholic is one of the better teams in the 10th region right now. Coach Summer Simmons and her staff knew they had to contain Sydney Morris to have any chance for a victory this afternoon. The opening quarter was back and forth with Harrison County taking a 10-5 lead until the Eagles scored the final 6 points to take a 13-10 lead after a quarter. The Eagles forced 7 turnovers and held Harrison to 4-9 from from the floor. The second quarter was close until midway through when the Eagles went cold from the floor, Harrison used a 13-0 run to end the half and take a 29-18 lead at half. At the half Sydney Morris had 7 points and 7 rebounds to lead Harrison Co, Morgan Flannery, an 8th grader, led Madison Southern with 7 points. Samantha Cornelison, only a freshman, but considered to be the top player for the Eagles was held 3 points on 1-8 shooting, 1-5 from behind the arc. The first half featured 4 ties and 3 lead changes. The second half both teams shot the ball well, Southern 6-12 and Harrison 7-14. Southern couldn’t overcome the poor second quarter shooting and loses to Harrison 65-49. Morris ends the afternoon for Harrison Co. with 20 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals. For the Eagles Samantha Cornelison finished with a team high 15 points and 7 steals. Flannery end with 11 points, Paige Carter with 8 points, Aleigh Richardson with 5 points and team high 6 rebounds, Madison Howell with 4 points, Zaria Carter 2 points, Macie Daniels 2 points and Skylar Sparks with 1 point for Southern.
