“While we are certainly disappointed to see Edwin and his family leave our program, we are all excited for this new opportunity for them to return home to the DMV area and lead a baseball program in the Big East Conference,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Matt Roan said.  “Edwin and his staff have worked very hard the last five years, and the fruit of that labor really began to show in 2020 when the team started the season 12-2.  We’ll always wonder what could have been this past season, but we know the future of Colonel baseball is bright because of Edwin’s hard work and dedication to EKU.”

A national search will begin immediately for EKU’s next baseball head coach.

In his five seasons at the helm, Thompson compiled a 122-123 record.  In 2018 and 2019, he led the program to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 1999 and 2000.

“I recall very well Edwin’s interview in 2015 during my first stop at EKU,” said Roan.  “His vision for what EKU baseball can become was bold, and he worked tirelessly to try and make it a reality.  Even more, Edwin formed lasting relationships with his student-athletes, his coaches, staff and this community that will last beyond his time on our campus.  We’re thankful for all of Edwin’s hard work and passion during his time here.”

Thompson guided Eastern Kentucky to five wins over top-30 ranked teams.  In addition to finishing the shortened 2020 season with a 12-2 record, the Colonels picked up a Friday night win at No. 11 LSU.

“The past five years at EKU have been amazing for my family and I,” Thompson said.  “The relationships that I have with all the current and former players is something that I look forward to continuing.  I will always be grateful for the opportunity Steve Lochmueller, President Michael Benson, Dan McBride and Matt Roanprovided with my first head coaching experience at the Division I level.  Richmond and EKU will always be home for me because the people in this community, alumni, and staff on this campus are truly special.  I know the program is in a great place on and off the field.  I am going to miss everyone that I worked with, including the coaches and staff of other EKU teams.  I enjoyed every minute of it.  I am excited to watch the program continue to grow under the leadership of Matt Roan.”

Assistant coach/pitching coach Shaun Cole will serve as the interim head coach at this time.
