The free ferry service at the Kentucky River is now officially closed for the next several weeks.
The ferry barge that connects Madison, Fayette and Jessamine counties officially closed today, Saturday Nov. 30. The closure could last up to two months as the ferry undergoes inspections and possible repairs,
The inspections are conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard, which certifies ferries. The ferry’s current inspection certificate is expiring, according to the Valley View Ferry Authority, a group of citizens and government officials from Madison, Jessamine and Fayette counties, which oversee the ferry service.
The ferry will be placed in dry dock for inspection on the banks of the Kentucky River. This is where and when the ferry staff do routine maintenance and address any needed repairs. The ferry shuttles both people and vehicles across the Kentucky River saving commuters time but also offering a ride from yesteryear.
The Valley View Ferry is the longest running ongoing business in the bluegrass state, established in 1780.
The public can keep up with the ferry progress updates on the ferry’s Facebook page.
