Retired Madison County firefighter and current business owner Donnie Weitkamp is running on the Democratic ticket in the primary for Magistrate for District 4. Weitkamp says his years with the fire department not only allowed him to meet with all kinds of people across Madison County, but well prepared him for the position he is seeking. He explains that he wants to help his community, and has a deep commitment to public service.
Weitkamp says that his District likely has the most county roads in Madison County, and that these need to be maintained on a constant basis. As far as the drug epidemic, Weitkamp says that education is a key component to combating the growing issue, and that it needs to start young in the schools.
He also explains that many do not consider the county animal shelter, and although they did just receive a large sum of money from a will, that this will not cover the everyday expenses that the shelter is in need of to operate.
Another topic that affects the county that Weitkamp mentioned was the depot, and says that although there is some time until the munitions are destroyed and the CSEPP money dries up, there still should be conversations had at the fiscal court level to think to the future as to how the land could be used or the money reallocated.
