Work is progressing for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s $13.5 million Interstate 75 safety and pavement improvement project in Madison County as contractors continued shifting construction this week from the southern section to the northern section of the project. That according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for District 7.
Today, Thursday, Sept. 4, crews worked to finalize rock application along shoulders, and on Friday, Sept. 5, the final traffic control will be removed on the southern section of the I-75 project (mile markers 86 to 92), including Exit 90 (US 25) and Exit 87 (Eastern Bypass), with all three lanes open each direction. While single lane closures are possible across the project, there will be no more full-time lane closures in the southern section.
The schedule for next week includes the following work on the northern section of the I-75 project (mile marker 92 to near 98 at the Clays Ferry Bridge):
- Monday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 9 – Daytime work will begin, which will include leveling outside rumble strips (an outside lane closure will be in effect)
- Nighttime operations on Monday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 9, will include a traffic diversion (the inside lanes will be closed with traffic being moved into the outside lanes)
- Milling for mainline I-75 will begin Tuesday, Sept. 9
- Traffic counter loops will be installed next Wednesday and Thursday evenings (Sept. 10-11) at milepoint 95.3
- Paving for mainline I-75 will begin next Thursday, Sept. 11
- Single-lane closures will remain in effect from mile markers 92 to 98 during paving operations
Motorists should continue to be alert for occasional lane closures due to striping or pavement marker installation across the project. All work is expected to be complete by late October.
This important project requires substantial construction to enhance safety and improve the ride for interstate travelers. The project includes repaving all six interstate lanes between mile marker 86 and the Clays Ferry bridge, making slide repairs, safety-focused exit ramp pavement upgrades, adding barrier walls at bridges, restriping lanes, replacing pavement markers, and adding radar traffic detection at interchange signals to improve traffic flow, and other upgrades.
