Anti-Tax Increase Petitions Totaled at Courthouse

This afternoon, a group of Madison County taxpayers hoping to halt a potential property tax increase intended to fund a 45 million dollar jail expansion gathered at the courthouse with petitions in hand. The clerk’s office counted the signatures, and arrived at a total amount of 6,479.

County Clerk Kenny Barger said that all that was needed was ten percent of individuals who voted in the last presidential election, which would have been a little over 3,000.

He says that the next step is to go through and verify the signatures. If the petition is certified, the tax increase will be left to the voting public on ballots in November 2020.

As Barger mentions in the video above, the Madison County Sheriff’s office will begin collecting the 2019 county property tax bills on November 15, 2019.

The delay is due to the recall petition. For those who have escrow accounts, mortgage companies are aware of the new dates.

The schedule for collections will begin :

    November 15, 2019 – December 15, 2019       2% discount

     December 16, 2019 – January 15, 202              face amount

     January 16, 2020 – February 15, 2020               5% penalty

     February 16, 2020 – April 30, 2020                    21% penalty

The 2019 county property tax bills will be mailed November 14, 2019.

Individuals with questions may contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 859-623-1511.
