First year Head Coach Austin Newton released the 2018/19 Madison Southern basketball schedule Tuesday night. The schedule features eleven home games and six games against teams that won twenty or more games last year. They play two teams that participated in the Sweet Sixteen and of the twenty three known opponents sixteen had winning records last year as well.
Season starts once again against district rival Madison Central, game will be played in Richmond on November 27th. After the Indians Eagles travel to play the 14th region champions Estill County. The first home game will be December 6th as the Powell County Pirates come to the Eagle Nest. Southern will take part in two holiday tournaments, December 19th they will go to Somerset to take part in the M & W Holiday Shootout at Southwestern and after Christmas Coach Newton returns to his Alma Mater and play in the Green River Holiday Classic at Campbellsville from the 27th-29th.
The new year sees some home games against Frederick Douglas and Montgomery County before they begin rival week. January 8th they take the short trip to play Model and on the 11th they play Berea in a girl/boy doubleheader. The reminder of January among the key opponents are Southwestern who won the 12th region last season and Somerset who won the 12th region All A. Back to back home games against Clark County (29-5 last year) and Mercer County (27-6 last year) start February before ending the regular season versus Tates Creek and Frankfort.
Eagles are expected to return some key players from last seasons team that finished district runner-up. Junior Chad Fugate averaged 10 points a game last season, Junior Hunter Buchanan returns 8 points per game, and Trent Moberly 7 point a game.
