Police responded to an incident involving an armed man today at the Valley View Ferry.
According to information posted by ferry personnel, an armed male entered the ferry terminal and informed the crew that he was in fear for his life because people were trying to kill him.
Capt. Shane Toomey and Able Seaman Brian Rutherford, both of whom recently competed Vessel Security Training at Sea School in Bayou La Batre a week ago, were trained to respond to the incident. Capt. Toomey instructed Able Seaman Rutherford to move the individual away from the ferry landing and away from the passengers while he called the Jessamine County Sheriff’s Office.
The JCSO responded immediately and the individual was disarmed and the situation diffused. JCSO is investigating.
Ferry officials credit the training of the men that, they added, had been paid for out of their own pockets, resulted in a safe resolution.
Passengers were kept away from what could have been a dangerous person and the individual received the assistance they needed, according the staff.
