During Tuesday night’s city council meeting there was a belated proclamation of April 8th to the 14th as public safety telecommunication week in honor of Berea’s police and fire departments to thank for the dangerous work they do. There also a proclamation of April 16th through the 20th as Saracare week. Saracare was established in honor Sara Elizabeth Kennedy and provides scholarships to students, funding for medical care, and recreational activities such as baseball.
There was also several updates from Berea’s siste city Takane, Japan. Delegates consisting of a city council member, farmers, and others will arrive in Kentucky in May 14th and come to Berea on the 15th. The delegates will tour the city and around Kentucky with several public events until their departure on the 18th of May. A full schedule will be made available next month.
There is also a new student exchange program being put in place. The one way program will have thirty six students attend Berea Community School for two weeks. The students will be partnered with a local student to have a shared cultural experience. Parents of local students will provide food and board to the exchange students and will be compensated.
The sister city program has gradually grown into a county wide program for Madison county and the respective region in Japan. The sister city program between Berea and Takane was first established 1988 and has been one of the longest running sister city programs.
The dates for the U.S. 27 Yard Sale have been put in place as the 7th, 8th, and 9th of June. It is the 7th annual year that Berea has participated in the event and the three hundred and twenty-five mile long yard sale it is the second biggest event for Berea annually. Despite the events size, Berea spends no city money on the event. The Yard Sale would like to remind you to seek permission before setting up your booth on public or private property.
Pastor of the First Church Christian Church Rick Fulton was also appointed to the Berea Housing Authority.
