According to Kentucky state police, A Transylvania police officer has been charged with first degree rape.
On Wednesday, March 2, the Kentucky State Police Post 11, London, Troopers served an indictment warrant, making an arrest as the result of a rape investigation stemming from 2020. The investigation from 2020 was recently presented to the McCreary County Grand Jury, which returned an indictment warrant for the suspect in the case, 31-year-old Dustin T. Watkins. Post 11 Troopers located and arrested Watkins, of Whitley City, in Lexington.
Watkins, until today, served as an officer with the Transylvania Police Department, and had served as a McCreary County Sheriff’s Deputy at the time of the alleged incident leading to the arrest. Watkins is charged with Rape 1st degree and has been transported to the Whitley County Detention Center. Both the Transylvania Police Department and the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department have been cooperative throughout the investigation.
The University police department issued a statement this afternoon, saying that Watkins has been suspended, and they were conduct a thorough investigation of the employment screening process. Watkins had been employed as a peace officer at the University since November of last year.
