For the first time since the 19th century hemp will be planted at the White Hall Historical Park. It is part of a program that called the Heritage Hemp Trail, which features locations throughout Kentucky that once grew hemp. White Hall curator Melissa Morris says that hemp is used mainly for it’s fiber in things such as clothing or rope. She also said that hemp was once a major cash crop for Kentucky after pioneers brought it to the state. She stated that hemp grows very well in Kentucky due to the soil and that the plant requires little care after it reaches a certain height.
The hemp at White Hall will be used for educational purposes to show visitors how it is grown and to teach them what is was used for in the past. The plot was dug by group organized by current Life Scout and aspiring Eagle Scout Nicholas Relich who is who serving the park to earn the title of Eagle Scout. The plot will be planted in the coming weeks in and will be grown throughout the summer.
