In a statement sent out this morning from the Madison County Detention Center, current appointed Jailer, Larry Brock, wants to set the record straight about the death of an inmate. The statement reads below.
Recently a lawsuit was filed in connection with the death of Johnathan
Mansfield at the Madison County Detention Center. The ensuing news
reporting of the filing has led to the belief by many in the community that the
lawsuit was related to an incident that recently occurred at the detention
center. We would like to clarify the matter.
In December 2024, former Jailer Steve Tussey announced his resignation from
the position effective at the end of 2024, which left two years remaining on his
term.
On 01/01/2025, I was appointed by Madison County Judge Executive Reagan
Taylor to serve out the remaining two years of Jailer Tussey’s term.
I think it is important to point out that the incident involving Mr. Mansfield
occurred in September 2024 and did not occur during my tenure as Jailer.
We have worked diligently to ensure that our employees are properly trained
and held to high standards in the performance of their duties.
During the past 10 months we have made significant strides forward in the
operation of the detention center and the care of inmates. I intend to run for
the Jailer position in the 2026 election so that we can continue to improve the
operation of the facility into the future.
I simply ask that those in the press who have reported on the Mansfield
lawsuit to clarify that the incident given rise to the suit occurred in 2024, not
in 2025.
