Authorities are searching for the person or persons involved in the near death of a Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy early Monday morning.
Around 10:30 Deputy Sheriff Billy Beavers was providing protection patrol for workmen on I-75 north. Beavers reported seeing a car coming down the wrong lane in the construction area at a high rate of speed. Beavers exited the cruiser to alert the driver they were in the wrong lane, when the car reportedly came directly at the deputy. Beavers luckily escaped injury by diving to safety, but the driver side door and side of the cruiser was hit, heavily damaged by the unknown driver.
The incident occurred in the northbound lane around mile marker 88.9.
Authorities are looking for the vehicle, now determined to be a white 2006-2009 Chevy Impala. This was determined from debris left at the scene according to Madison County Chief Deputy Tony Terry.
Terry added “We are there for those workers protection, if the Deputy’s car had not been there, the driver potentially could have killed or seriously injured those working.”
