RPD releases statement on pedestrian struck by vehicle

Around 1:30 PM on April 5, 2024, the Richmond Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to a distressing incident at mile marker 90 on Interstate 75 Northbound to a call about a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a male individual, identified as Michael Cornett (36), was attempting to cross from the northbound side of the interstate to the southbound side. In a tragic turn of events, Cornett took off across the lanes and was struck by oncoming traffic.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported Cornett to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the vehicle involved were from Tennessee and were fully cooperative in the investigative process.

The circumstances surrounding Cornett’s decision to cross the interstate, particularly at that location where there appeared to be no destination, remain unclear.

The Richmond Police Department urges all individuals to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in hazardous activities near or on roadways.
