RPD: “Lump” in Pants Results in Heroin Trafficking Charge for Richmond Man

Richmond Police Department recently took a man into custody after the vehicle he was seen driving was allegedly drifting erratically into other lanes.

Police pulled the car over and spoke with the suspect, Joshua Taylor New. The citation states that New had bloodshot eyes, but told the officer that he had simply not slept in awhile. As for the swerving, New explained that he was on his tablet looking for music while driving.

As a search was conducted, police note in the citation that there was an “abnormal, hard lump” in New’s pants. According to the citation, New then denied a further search and refused to speak further with police.

It was later discovered that the lump was a package of suspected heroin, weighing in at 33 grams. New was taken to the Detention Center and charged with careless driving and trafficking in heroin. Police note that after conducting sobriety tests, it did not appear that New was under the influence while driving.
