Anthony Looney, a nurse practitioner and lifelong healthcare worker, has officially announced his candidacy for State Representative in Kentucky’s 81st House district, which includes Richmond and Berea of Madison County.
Born in Pike County to a coal mining family, Looney is a life-long Kentuckian with values and ethics rooted in Appalachia. A spokesperson for Looney says he understands the financial insecurity that plagues rural parts of the Commonwealth and won’t back down to lawmakers who he says seem dead set on making the working class the working poor.
“The Kentucky legislature could have voted to remove taxes from diapers. What did they remove tax from instead? Gold bars! Leaving the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.”
Looney has practiced in jail systems, nursing homes, delivered babies, and now practices as a critical care nurse practitioner which has given him firsthand insight into Medicare/Medicaid cuts that were just passed at the federal level.
“Medication costs will likely go up, getting in to see a health care provider will take longer, rural hospitals are likely to shut down, and who does any of that benefit? Not the working-class people of Kentucky!”
Looney is vocal that public dollars need to stay within the public education system. He claims that teachers are the backbones of our communities, and that they need support them as they transform Kentucky’s kids into Kentucky’s next generation of leaders.
