35-year-old Corie Speake of Richmond

Richmond man charged with attempted murder

(The following story has been updated with clarifications from sources close to the case.)

A domestic argument in Madison County has resulted in attempted murder charges being levied against a Madison County man. 35-year-old Corie Speake of Red House Road in Richmond is facing a class B felony, attempted murder charge stemming from an incident on Big Hill Avenue in Richmond early Thursday morning.

According to the citation, the victim stated she and her boyfriend had a verbal argument, and the boyfriend left to go to his motorcycle club. The girlfriend decided she had not finished talking to him and showed up at the club. This is when Speake intervened in the matter between the victim and her boyfriend and told the victim she would have to leave. Speake also told the victim she would have to leave the nearby former Swifty Gas Station, after she went there.

The victim then stated she was on her way home, when she changed her mind and turned around near the Castle parking lot on Big Hill Avenue. That’s when she stated she realized Speake was tailing her. The victim stated she had to quickly swerve to avoid Speakes car from hitting her and struck a fire hydrant, flipping her vehicle.

Witnesses, however, stated the victim was traveling at a high rate of speed, and thought that the victim hit the defendant.

According to Richmond Police, surveillance video was obtained of the collision, and Speake was charged with attempted murder Friday night and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center. The Detention Center has the charge listed as ‘murder’ however, that is incorrect.
