The Richmond-Madison County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and The Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery will be commemorating military service personnel on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2022 at the Maple Grove Cemetery on East Main Street in Richmond. The rain-or-shine family-friendly program will start promptly at 12:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend to show appreciation for active duty and veteran service members, while reflecting upon the sacrifice of our veterans. Active military personnel choosing to participate are requested to wear their duty uniform and veterans may wear their service cap or branch logo. Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs if seating is needed or desired.
This year’s program will include a roll call of cemetery veterans, wreath laying, and a military branch flag unfurling ceremony to honor veterans of all military branches.
The Richmond-Madison County Community has a strong tradition of citizens serving in our nation’s uniformed services. Locally, five of the historic Richmond High School’s graduates were Tuskegee Airmen, among the many more area men and women who served or currently serve, including several active NAACP Branch members. The Maple Grove Cemetery has rich ties to the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskeegee Airmen.
The local branch welcomes all, including members of the press, in honoring and celebrating our servicemembers, including the many black servicemembers at Maple Grove Cemetery, and their many contributions to America and Madison County.
