RICHMOND, KY – David Johnson, a public school teacher and lifelong advocate for working families, has officially announced his candidacy for State Representative in Kentucky’s 91st House District, which includes Estill, Powell, and part of Madison County.
A native of Madison County, Johnson’s story is deeply rooted in Kentucky values and public service. His father served as a police officer in Winchester, and his stepfather is a U.S. Navy veteran. The Johnson family’s roots run deep in Estill County, especially in the Red Lick community — where faith, family, and hard work still matter.
“I’ve spent what seems like most of my life in the classroom, not the country club,” said Johnson. “I know what it means to stretch a dollar, to worry about insulin prices, and to fight for kids who deserve better from our state.”
Johnson has taught in Estill, Madison, and now Clark County Schools, giving him firsthand knowledge of the challenges local families and educators face every day. He’s also a Type 1 diabetic who helped advocate for Kentucky’s insulin copay cap law — ensuring working people can afford the medicine they need to live. In addition, he has worked with state legislators naming US 421 Battlefield Memorial Highway and highway 1016 in Berea after the late sheriff Jerry Combs both in Madison County.
Johnson’s last run for public office came in 2018, when he narrowly lost the Richmond City Commissioner race by just 90 votes, out of thousands cast — demonstrating both his commitment and strong community support.
“For years, Frankfort politicians have attacked our public education system — underfunding our classrooms and disrespecting the very teachers who built this state,” Johnson said. “I’m running to fight back, to stand with our educators, and to protect the future of rural communities like ours.”
While his opponents may have deep pockets and political connections, Johnson says his campaign is powered by community, not cash.
“I’m not trying to buy this seat — I’m earning it. I’ve worked paycheck to paycheck just like most families in this district, and I’ll never forget who I’m fighting for.”
Johnson’s platform focuses on rural healthcare, support for public schools, protecting workers’ rights, and delivering real representation for Estill, Powell, and Madison County.
