On Tuesday night’s City Commission meeting parents brought forth concerns over the lack of child care in Richmond and Madison County. This comes after the closing of the Richmond Childcare Center, many parents now say that their is a wait list for other day cares in the city. The building that the Richmond Childcare Center was located in was owned by the city, but the business was not. Mayor Jim Barnes said that the commission will talk about possible solutions at the commissions next work meeting. Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tempor said that the commision was unaware of the problem until it was expressed at the meeting.
The Richmond Police Department is also hiring two new positions, a new records clerk and new officer who will enter the academy in July. The also promoted two officers to the rank of Master Police Officer which is a newer position in the department. The master officers are below the rank of Sargent but Assistant Chief Rodney Richardson says that the position was created with the goal to retain officers and to prepare them for the rank of Sergent. He also stated that they will begin to take on a leadership role among lower rank officers.
There was also a proclamation of decleration of April as hunger awareness month in Richmond by Mayor Jim Barnes. He cited the reason being that various food banks, churches, and EKU come together to help fight hunger in Richmond.
