The Blue Grass Chemical stockpile houses over five hundred tons of blister and nerve agents. The agents are originally in liquid form instead of gas as commonly believed, but over time many of the weapons have solidified into a sludge like substance known as a “heel”. The process of building the destruction plant began in 2003 and soon destruction of the weapons will begin.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Senator Mitch McConnell delivered a key note speech talking about his mission of getting the weapons destroyed that began in the 80’s. He said that dealing with government bureaucracy was one of the most difficult parts of getting the pilot plant built. Governor Matt Bevin also delivered a speech where he said that the ribbon cutting is a historic day and thanked all those involved in the process of destroying the weapons.
In regards to recent discussions of building a second static detonation chamber, Bevin said that a team of experts are considering all possibilities and if the second chamber is necessary or if it would provide a decent return on investment for tax payers.
