Remembering the fatal Morgan home invasion one year later

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly home invasion of former State Representative C. Wesley Morgan.

Police say 24-year-old Shannon Gilday confessed to shooting his way into the home armed with an AR-15. Gilday would later admit to murdering C. Wesley Morgan’s daughter, Jordan Morgan. After Gilday reportedly shot at C. Wesley Morgan, he returned fire on Gilday. Morgan was responsible for saving the rest of his family during the harrowing incident, including his wife and younger daughter.

Gilday reportedly fled to Florida after the shootout and was missing for nearly a week, before returning to Madison County. That’s when a Madison County sheriff’s deputy located and arrested Gilday on February 28th, 2022 in close proximity to the Morgan home, where he apparently was intent on returning.

A search of his recovered car resulted in the discovery of an AR-15 in the trunk, camo fatigues, and a long piece of nylon rope.

Investigators say Gilday was obsessed with the idea of an impending nuclear war, and gaining access to the underground bunker located under the Morgan home at any cost.

Gilday was initially charged with murder, burglary, criminal mischief, assault, and two counts of attempted murder. Gilday was then additionally charged with third-degree assault following an incident involving a corrections officer that occurred at the Madison County Detention Center after his arrest.

Lawyers representing Gilday have entered not guilty pleas on all counts arguing Gilday’s mental health. Gilday‘s next court appearance is scheduled for March 17th at 10:00 am.

Earlier this week, C. Wesley Morgan also filed a civil wrongful death suit against Gilday, his mother, and other unnamed defendants seeking compensatory and punitive damages in the case.
