November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and November 14th is recognized as World Diabetes Day. The Madison County Health Department told WBON-TV about their year-long programs that are offered for free to anyone interested: the Diabetes Prevention Program and the Diabetes Management Program.
Certified Diabetes Educator Margaret Maupin-Story explains the programs, and also says that there is an event with free screenings going on today at First Christian Church in Richmond.
Director of the Health Department Nancy Crewe also told us about her personal experience in the Diabetes Prevention Program, in which she says there exists a camaraderie when working with others to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Crewe says she was able to lose 18 pounds with the program, and has kept the weight off since.
Call the Berea location of the Madison County Health Department or check out the website to register for one of the programs now, which begin in January for 2018.
Also look during the month for the blue flags in both Berea and Richmond, which represent those living with the chronic disease both Type I and Type II. Story says that out of all those in Madison County, 13% of the population lives with Diabetes.
