Thursday, 2/11/22 at approximately 1:30 am, Deputy Hunter Martin conducted a traffic stop on a black Lexus at the intersection of 9th St and Main St in Clay City being operated by William Bowman, age 28, of Lexington. According to the Powell County Sheriffs Department, as Deputy Martin exited his patrol vehicle and attempted to approach the stopped vehicle, the operator then fled onto Main Street at a high rate of speed where a pursuit would ensue.
Deputy Martin was quickly joined and assisted by Clay City PD and Stanton PD due to them also being in the vicinity of Main St. While passing Clay City Elementary, Bowman was seen throwing items from the car, suspected to be methamphetamine, out of the driver window. This pursuit would continue on Main Street before heading onto the 16MM west bound on ramp where Bowman would come to a quick stop and let out a female. Bowman then entered the Mountain Parkway and continued to flee into Clark County at speeds exceeding 115 mph. At one point, Bowman crossed the median and was traveling west bound in the east bound lane driving towards on-coming traffic. He carried on for approximately 14 miles before exiting the parkway and onto I64.
Officials state, Bowman made a u-turn at the 97 MM and got back onto the Mountain Parkway where he would proceed to flee another 16 miles back into Powell County and exit the Mountain Parkway at the 16MM Clay City Exit. Deputy Martin was able to catch back up with Bowman on Main Street near Clay City Elementary. He then turned onto 7th Avenue and eventually made his way back to Main St where the pursuit would end near IGA due to Bowman running out of gas.
Bowman was placed under arrest and transported to Powell County Detention Center to be lodged on the following charges..
