Public Meeting Held for Proposal to Augment Processing Chemical Weapons at Blue Grass Army Depot

A meeting was held Tuesday night for the public in order to discuss new advancements for the destruction of chemical weapons at the BlueGrass Army Depot.

The proposal discussed would augment the existing static detonation chamber being used to destroy the mustard gas on site to also be able to process the nerve agent M55 rockets stored at the site.

The augmentation would take place after all of the mustard gas on site has been destroyed and a second detonation chamber would be brought to the site as well.

The M55s are currently being processed by an explosive neutralization system. The existing system requires workers to risk exposure to the nerve agent and the static detonation chamber will serve as a safer alternative that would also help the munitions be destroyed before the Dec. 31st 2023 deadline.
