The fate of the highly contested tax increase could be in dire straits, following a movement to petition the proposed county ordinance.
Initially slated to be on the 2020 General Election ballot next November, the Madison County fiscal court conducted their first reading of a new ordinance (19-21) on Tuesday morning. This ordinance would revoke the original proposed ordinance, effectively eliminating the tax increase.
If Ordinance 19-21 is enacted, this would reduce the proposed 19.6 cents per $100 tax rate to 8.3 cents per $100. However, the fiscal court would continue to be allowed to promote criminal justice and tax reform at the local and state levels.
