Supporting Others in Active Recovery or S.O.A.R is a program at Northpoint Training Center in Boyle County where inmates who have completed recovery from addiction can mentor and help those who still suffer from addiction. Inmates who have committed to sober living are housed together in a communal dorm. The goal is to provide a steady continuation of care as inmates complete their sentences and other programs.
The program was funded in part by a $300,000 grant from the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy which pays for several positions in the prison. The program currently houses up to eighty-eight inmates who have met the requirements to join. Warden of Northpoint Training Center Brad Adams said that he hopes that the program can be expanded and used as a model for other prisons in the country.
