The Speedwell Road area in Madison County is expected to see a massive project that could potentially employ 200 to 300 employees.
The land, formerly the Dause Farm, has been acquired by a company called AppHarvest. The company engages in building and operating large-scale, high-tech greenhouse farms. AppHarvest was founded in 2018 and is based in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Speedwell Road site will be home to a 60 acre enclosed greenhouse facility. The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted Tuesday morning with Company officials, Judge Executive Reagan Taylor, EKU President David McFaddin, and Congressman Andy Barr in attendance.
Barr spoke about how the new facility will impact economic development in the area.
AppHarvest has similar facilities in Morehead KY, and is currently expanding into Berea as well. To find out more about this company’s unique approach to a less water, no pesticide vegetable production at their website Appharvest.com.
