Richmond Police and other first responders were called to Walmart in Richmond tonight for an unusual situation around 9:30.
Police say a man entered the store with the intention of buying a firearm. When he was denied, he reportedly took a knife from store inventory and went to the Walmart bathrooms. The man apparently started inflicting self-harm by stabbing and cutting himself. The man then came back into the main part of the store and continued to inflict self-harm to himself, to the alarm and shock of other shoppers.
The reason for the man’s actions has yet to be determined.
Authorities speculate the man was experiencing a mental health episode.
The man was eventually subdued and taken to a local medical facility for treatment for what was described as critical injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
No other customers were harmed in the incident according to Richmond Police officials.
