Opening day of modern gun deer season in Kentucky has resulted in one fatality reported today. Garrard County Coroner Shane Young got the call around 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning November 11, 2023.
The apparent accident occurred on a farm on Poor Ridge Pike in Garrard County. The preliminary evidence suggests the victim, 77-year-old Russell Stillwell from Goshen Indiana, may have been using his deer rifle as a makeshift walk stick to traverse an embankment, when it discharged fatally injuring him.
Stillwell was in town to hunt on family property.
The body has been taken to the State Medical Examiners office. KSP, Garrard County Sheriff’s Department, and the Garrard County Coroner’s office all aided at the scene.
The Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife is heading up the investigation.
