40 year old Ryan Denholm, after holding police at bay for around two hours this morning, eventually surrendered peacefully to police. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on Turpin Drive in Richmond, where officials blocked streets and evacuated other apartments for safety during the ordeal.
Richmond Police say Denholm entered the apartment armed with a handgun demanding to speak to his girlfriend. The female victim and two other people were inside the apartment when Mr. Denholm forced his way inside. Mr. Denholm held the occupants at gunpoint until police arrived.
When officers arrived, they were able to negotiate the release of the female victim without injury. The other two occupants had to be rescued from a bedroom window. The female victim had an active Emergency Protective Order against Denholm. Police negotiators eventually convinced Mr. Denholm to surrender peacefully without incident, and he was taken into custody and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
Mr. Denholm was charged with the following:
Burglary 1st degree
Kidnapping-AdultWanton Endangerment 1st degree
Possession of a handgun by a convicted felon
Violation of a KY EPO/DVO
This is not Denholm’s first brush with the law.
Denholm was charged with complicity to murder, complicity to attempted murder, and complicity to first degree burglary in 2016. The charges stemmed from his involvement in the 2011 murder of Zachary Flower of Berea. The state recommended 5 year sentences for the charges to run consecutively. Kentucky law allows the complicity to murder charge and other charges to be paroled after serving only 20% of the sentence.
Denholm has a long list of other charges levied against him in several other cases and jurisdictions around the state. These include burglary, fleeing, hindering prosecution of apprehension, and other felonies.
