Richmond police were called to the soccer fields at Million Park on Stratford Drive In Richmond Saturday morning, for what parents described as a “suspicious male” watching the game and talking to children behind a tree.
When officers arrived and confronted the man, they say he became confrontational, evasive, and resisted commands to stop walking away. Officers say the man continued to move closer to children playing on the soccer fields. That’s when they attempted to detain the subject. They say the man, now identified as 53-year-old Dewey Varner, became more belligerent, resisting officers, resulting in one of the officer’s prescription eyeglasses to be broken.
A search of the man’s bag produced a loaded revolver, numerous plastic baggies containing residue believed to be heroin. Officers say more drugs were discovered that they believe to be methamphetamine and heroin.
Police say Varner also had a loaded handgun and they later learned he is a convicted felon. Varner was charged with various drug, possession, and criminal mischief charges.
