Nine Kentucky counties were represented at Operation UNITE’s third Shoot Hoops Not Drugs regional basketball camp held Monday, June 15, at Farristown Middle School in Madison County.
The 139 youth participants came to Berea from Anderson, Clark, Estill, Franklin, Garrard, Jackson, Jessamine, Madison, and Rockcastle counties, as well as from Sarasota, Florida.
Winning portable basketball goals given out at the end of camp were 11-year-old Kamelah Compton and 10-year-old Gideon Varney, both from Richmond.
In addition to the skills program, led by former University of Kentucky point guard and four-time All-SEC Academic Team member Jarrod Polson, 56 parents/guardians participated in an education presentation on “One Pill Can Kill,” the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s program about the dangers posed by Fentanyl.
