Residents that were displaced by the evacuation order issued after a train derailed in Rockcastle County can now return to their homes.
Officials announced at a press briefing that the evacuation order was lifted as of 3 p.m. Thursday.
The City of Livingston was ordered to evacuate after the derailment on Wednesday released sulfur dioxide in the area.
The fire that was burning at the crash site has now been extinguished.
Around 2:30 Wednesday, a CSX train derailed north of Livingston, KY. Preliminary information now indicates that at least 16 cars were involved, including two molten sulphur cars that were breached and lost some of their contents, which resulted in a fire.
When molten sulphur burns, it is known to release sulphur dioxide. Specialized equipment was deployed to conduct air monitoring in the area. CSX is in close contact with the Rockcastle county emergency teams as they continue to assess the situation. CSX says they will work together with the local authorities to secure the area and safety is their top priority as we develop a recovery plan.
CSX provided impacted residents housing Wednesday night and meals thanksgiving day by working with local hotels and restaurants in the area.
